In a recent interview with USA Today, Dr Anthony Fauci said Americans should prepare for a tough holiday season, with the coronavirus pandemic likely showing little improvement over Christmas or New Year’s Day.
According to Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, coronavirus cases, which are currently on the rise in the United States, are expected to remain at high levels through December, January and February.
“If the outbreak continues to increase and you have over 100,000 infections per day and 1,300 deaths per day and the tally keeps increasing … I don’t see it being any different during the Christmas and New Years than Thanksgiving, ”said Fauci.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the United States now has more than 13 million cases of COVID-19, just six days after the country passed 12 million confirmed cases. The United States leads the world in the total number of coronavirus infections.

Earlier in November, Fauci told CNN that an ordinary Christmas would be hard to imagine for 2020, but said a transition to “normalcy” would take some time.
“It won’t be a light switch,” Fauci said at the time. “We’re not going to turn it on and off … It’s going to be a gradual build-up of more normalcy over the weeks and months as we get closer to 2021.”
