FCC unveils new mobile service cards

The Federal Communications Commission on Friday released a new set of maps showing the coverage and availability of mobile services, as reported by major wireless service providers.

Why is this important: Billions of dollars are about to be spent to increase broadband access for underserved Americans. The better the data that drives these expenditures, the more effective the dollars will be.

  • The FCC says the new cards represent a step toward complying with a 2020 law that requires better public disclosure of broadband and wireless service information.
  • The cards use a new data specification that “will improve the uniformity and consistency of broadband availability data,” according to an FCC statement.

The big picture: The FCC’s previous broadband availability mapping efforts have long been criticized for overestimating the services available to consumers.

  • In June, the White House Biden released its own maps in an attempt to demonstrate the general need for better service in underserved areas.
