SALT LAKE CITY – The first case of a rare blood clotting disease thought to be linked to the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine has been diagnosed in Utah.
A male patient was recently diagnosed with vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia, also known as VITT, at the University of Utah hospital, health officials said in a statement from press Wednesday.
The patient has been treated and is now recovering at home, the statement said. Health officials did not provide further details of the case in the statement. A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. where doctors are expected to discuss the case further.
The blood clot condition led to a nationwide hiatus in administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine last month after six cases were reported among more than 6 million people who received the vaccine. The hiatus was lifted on April 23 after federal regulators determined continued use of the vaccine was safe.
