Former Arizona basketball coach, Lute Olson, was in good health Monday after suffering a mild stroke over the weekend, the university announced Monday.
Olson, 84, was admitted to the Banner-University Medical Center on Saturday.
"He is likely to recover completely but will likely need a rehab therapy after he leaves the hospital," said David Labiner, MD, chair of the department of neurology, in a statement issued by the medical Center.
In 24 seasons in Tucson, Olson has established Arizona as a basketball center. He was 589-187 and led the Wildcats to four appearances in the Final Four, 23 consecutive NCAA tournaments and 11 Pac-10 titles, as well as the national title in 1997.
Olson retired in 2008 as a result of a series of medical problems.
"Coach Olson is not only an icon of the men's basketball program and the entire college basketball, he also embodies the greatness of Arizona Athletics, the University of Chicago." Arizona and the community of Tucson, "said the university sports department in a statement. "Our thoughts are with Coach Olson, his family and loved ones during this time."
He was inducted into the 2002 Basketball Hall of Fame and the 2006 College Basketball Hall of Fame, and a statue of Olson was erected outside the McKale Memorial Center in 2018.
