The Maryland freshman, Mike Locksley, was on the market for a quarterback transfer of graduate students this season, and he landed one with significant experience as an FBS. The former Virginia Tech caller, Josh Jackson, announced on Twitter Monday night his intention to switch to the Terrapins.
As a rising Junior Redshirt, Jackson – a 6-foot-1, 215-pound player capable of playing games in the air and on the ground – will have two more years of eligibility at College Park. He is about to graduate from Virginia Tech this spring, which will allow him to play for the Terrapins in 2019.
Jackson got the starting quarterback spot at the Hokies before the 2017 season and was immediately successful. He collected 235 yards and a touchdown, then 101 yards on the ground and another point in the opening win against West Virginia. He finished the season with 2,991 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, while adding 324 rushing yards and six goals en route to a spot at Camping World Bowl against Oklahoma State and a total record of 9-4.
His second season did not take place as planned, however. He started the first three games of the season with five touchdown passes, but had a broken leg at the end of week 3 against Old Dominion, who ended his season. Senior rider Ryan Willis took over for Jackson and had 2,716 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Jackson will join Tyrrell Pigrome and Max Bortenschlager, both of whom started on their resumes, in the quarterback room for the Locksley Terrapins. Rookie Kasim Hill led the Terrapins last year but was injured last November and registered on the NCAA transfer portal to explore his options. In addition to the already registered quarterbacks, Maryland won a recruiting battle against the Florida State for the four-star class of Lance LeGendre's quarterback in 2019.
