Eight out of ten women consume prescribed drugs and are reimbursed during their pregnancy.
In 7% of the cases, it is about drugs potentially dangerous for the fetus or likely to cause anomalies in its development, reveals Tuesday Le Soir on the basis of studies of the Mutualités libres and Mutualités socialistes.
"For pharmacists, it is difficult and delicate to ask every woman if she tries to have a child or is pregnant," notes Alain Chaspierre, pharmacist and president of the Association of Belgian Pharmacists (APB). The latter wants to "encourage women to mention it spontaneously to their pharmacist and their doctor".
A dialogue that would avoid the prescription of drugs potentially harmful to the fetus.
Nevertheless, some harmful drugs are available without a prescription, or even on the internet. This is the case of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Diclofenac or Ibuprofen, to be absolutely banned. Only paracetamol can treat pain without harming the fetus.
Another solution would be to put a pictogram of pregnant women on boxes of dangerous drugs, as is the case in France, writes Le Soir.
