A study of McDonald's restaurants revealed the presence of faeces on the touch screens used to order.
This is a little bit nasty, but it will at least have the merit of challenging us about a public health problem.
If you're a regular at the famous McDonald's fast-food chain, it's very likely that you will now look differently at your serving of french fries and cheeseburger.
Indeed, a research conducted by the London Metropolitan University for the British newspaper Metro showed that the restaurants of the franchise housed formidable bacteria called fecal coliform.
As their name suggests, these pathogens are derived from human cacas and can cause gastroenteritis manifesting as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
To reach this conclusion, scientists badyzed eight McDonald's restaurants in London and Birmingham. The result is thrilling, since they have identified the presence of these microbes in nearly half of them.
This information is very worrying, as most customers do not wash their hands after ordering and eat their food with their bare hands.
Infection risks comparable to hospitals
Dr. Paul Matewele, who led the research team, explained:
" We were all surprised how many fecal and intestinal bacteria there were on the touch machines. This is the kind of infection that people catch in hospitals. "
In addition to faecal coliforms, other bacteria have been observed, such as staphylococcus, which can cause blood poisoning and listeria. The latter is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and people with weak immune systems.
Dr. Matewele added:
" Tactile technologies are increasingly used in our daily lives, but these results show that people should not eat food right after touching them, they are unhygienic and can spread diseases. "
McDonald's, for its part rebadured by pointing out that its screens are systematically disinfected. The brand also invites its customers to wash their hands before taking their meals. This is the best solution.
