AWS ventures into the field of telco: should operators shake?

In detail, Amazon Web Services announces the AWS Global Accelerator service. "Unlike the decentralized approach of the Internet, it allows us to handle failures in an almost imperceptible way for applications."

AWS Global Accelerator routes end-user traffic to the nearest point on the edge of the AWS network, and from there the traffic travels over the AWS global network.

AWS users can control the routing of traffic to these regional endpoints through routing policies that consider network health, latency, and geographic location for ease of routing traffic across multiple regions and to ensure high efficiency and extremely high availability, "Peter DeSantis added.

AWS also announced the introduction of the AWS Transit Gateway (AWS), which provides centralized management between thousands of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) accounts and AWS accounts on the global network, using AWS native services such as CloudWatch and VPC Flow Log for security and monitoring purposes.

Impact: Users can implement and maintain compliance and security policies, and provide greater scalability between on-premise computing and the AWS cloud.

In addition, AWS upgraded its data center broadband network by launching C5n instances that provide up to 100 Gbps of network bandwidth. This will speed up the transfer of data to and from Amazon S3 storage, useful for badysis, machine learning, Big Data and Data Lake applications.

Amazon also introduced Elastic Fabric Adapter, a network adapter for Amazon EC2 instances offering high performance and scalability to thousands or tens of thousands of compute cores, for high performance computing (HPC) applications.

These new capabilities give the AWS networking system a global reach and potentially put AWS in competition with carriers and other communications service providers.

Still, this competition also exists for some time. AWS and its competitors in the field of hypercloud have been offering networking services for some time now. AWS launched PrivateLink last year, a service designed to allow SaaS developers to provide private endpoints to users.

Also last year, Google launched a connectivity offering between enterprise private cloud networks and Google Cloud. But also tiering services to allow their customers to choose between connectivity via telecom operators or Google's own global infrastructure.

In addition, hypercloud providers have invested heavily in submarine cables. So, is this the apocalypse announced for telecommunications operators? It is too early to tell. These companies are always partnering with AWS to provide AWS services to their business customers. The multi-cloud management logic at work with telecom operators is also a good indication of a value that AWS can not currently offer.
