CINEMA – In the long list of adaptations to the cinema of successful children's literature here is a newcomer. Already announced by Disney, "Artemis Fowl" is unveiled in images in a first trailer this Tuesday, November 27.

Criminal and genius at 12, this is how we can describe this new character who will make his first appearance on the screen on August 14, 2019.

Adapted from the novels of author Eoin Colfer, "Artemis Fowl" first appeared in 2001. Since then, the young Irish character has had eight novels, the last of which was published in 2013.

Few details are revealed in this first trailer but some characters are already clearly identifiable to the faithful novels. One thing is certain, Artemis Fowl is greedy, dark, selfish and fearsomely intelligent, traits that should cut with other adaptations of youth literature. This anti-hero label is dear to its creator Eoin Colfer.

An expected film since 2001

For the big-screen adaptation, Disney turned to Kenneth Branagh, director of the movie "The Crime of the Orient-Express" and the first "Thor". Since his success as a bookseller in 2001, a film project was born, but it was not until 2019 that the young "Artemis Fowl" finally got his moment of glory in the cinema.

In novels as in this film, Artemis Fowl is a 12-year-old Irish boy, descended from a long line of criminals and already endowed with extraordinary intelligence. He alone will deliver a tough fight against the Fairy People, powerful and mysterious creatures who live in an underworld and who may well have been responsible for his father's disappearance two years ago.

For his first film role, the young Irish actor Ferdia Shaw will play this anti-hero of children's literature alongside Judi Dench, Nonso Anozie and Lara McDonnell.
