In patients with endometriosis, fatigue is a major symptom. Its incidence and intensity are, however, underestimated.

To evaluate fatigue in women diagnosed with endometriosis, Swiss researchers (*) followed 1,120 women in Germany, Austria and Switzerland between 2010 and 2016. A total of 560 patients in this cohort suffered from this chronic disease. affecting 1 French in 10. And the control group consisted of 560 unaffected women. Each answered several questions about the impact of endometriosis on their quality of life. Among other things, the volunteers had to inform the level of fatigue on a scale ranging from 1 (never tired) to 5 (very often tired).

Inflammation causing fatigue?

As a result, 50.7% of women diagnosed had fatigue, compared to 22.4% of women in the control group. "This phenomenon could be explained by lesions of the endometrium responsible for inflammation that activates the immune system. A mechanism involved in fatigue, "says Professor Brigitte Leeners, author of the study. "This better knowledge of fatigue must come to improve care". Thus doctors will be able to "offer women solutions that reduce the risk of insomnia, pain peaks, depression and stress". All these symptoms accentuate fatigue. Note: Endometriosis is characterized by abnormal migration of cells. "Tissue similar to the endometrial tissue that develops out of the uterus then causes lesions, adhesions and ovarian cysts, (endometriomas) in colonized organs," say experts at www.endofrance.org. "This colonization, if it mainly takes place on the bads and the peritoneum can frequently extend to the urinary tract, digestive, and more rarely pulmonary." (*) University Hospital Zurich.
