forget squares and circles, scientists have discovered a new geometric shape

SCIENCE – We do not stop progress. Scientists from the University of Seville, more specifically from its Institute of Biomedicine, have discovered a new geometric form: the "scutoid". It is by working on the epithelial cells (covering the surface of the body and lining the inside of all the hollow organs) that the Spanish researchers have come to define this new geometric form.

But what is -he? "The epithelial cells are the" building blocks "with which an organism is formed, they are like Lego from which the animals are made," explains Spanish professor Luis Maria Escudero.

When an organism evolves, becoming more complex, these cells will "move and unite to organize properly and give their final form to the organs," says the professor. And this is where the geometric form "scutoid" comes in.

It is because they have this specific geometric form that these epithelial cells are able to interlock and form organs. Previously, the scientific community thought that these cells had the shape of "truncated pyramids". However, Spanish researchers claim that the shape of these – a kind of "twisted prism" according to the release – is more complex, giving birth to the "scutoid".

Beyond the pleasure of being able to add a word to our vocabulary, this discovery has a real scientific interest in terms of biomedicine.

Spanish researchers now hope to "find the molecules that cause cells to adopt this form", and to advance research on the fabrication of artificial organs in the laboratory.
