The Prefect of Reunion triggered level 4 of the device against dengue fever. This stage strengthens the mobilization of means against the tiger mosquito vector of the disease.

The dengue epidemic is gaining momentum in Reunion. On the contrary, with nearly 5,970 cases recorded since January 1, the time has come for the intensification of means to fight against the disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito. The prefect of the island has triggered Monday, July 10 level 4 of the Orsec plan (Organization of the Civil Security Response) to fight against arboviroses. The epidemic alert reached a worrying stage : level 4 is the last level before the "mbad epidemic" stage, which is accompanied by the intervention of the adapted military service regiment (RSMA). For now, with the activation of level 4, the focus is on strengthening the mobilization and prevention of dengue fever. Repellents will be distributed to fight against tiger mosquitoes. Communication and information from the public and doctors are also on the agenda, says AFP

Dengue cases potentially underestimated

These measures are intended to stem the spread of dengue while the case estimate may be well below the reality, according to health authorities. So far 124 patients have required hospitalization. But doctors are worried about the high number of visits to patients with symptoms of dengue (high fever, nausea, vomiting, headaches, joint pain, etc.).

"We are more than 18,000 consultations for dengue, "observes Luce Menudier, epidemiologist intervention cell in the region (Cire) Public Health France, cited by Ouest-France. The priority is therefore to put a halt to the circulation of the virus during the cold season at the risk of seeing a mbadive outbreak of cases in the coming months.
