The life expectancy of Americans has decreased again in 2017. It is now a little over 76 years for men and 81 years for women. This decrease is mainly related to two factors: the increase in the number of suicides, and especially the number of overdoses related to opiates. It is a scourge that has been accelerating for four years.
In 2017, there were more than 70,000 overdoses in the United States. In 20 years, the figure has quadrupled in this country. The National Center for Health Statistics differentiates two types of overdoses: those related to non-opiate drugs, such as cocaine, or MDMA: 27,000 deaths per year.
