A 39-year-old woman died of cancer after receiving a smoker's lungs. This patient from the University Hospital of Montpellier was followed since childhood for cystic fibrosis. In November 2015, while suffering from a "sudden decrease in her breathing capacity," she was grafted, reports an article in the journal Lung Cancer, cited by Le Monde.
The graft came from a 57-year-old woman who had smoked the equivalent of 20 cigarettes a day for 30 years. Before the transplant, the examinations found no anomalies.
Two years later, the patient suffers from respiratory failure and fever. After a chest scan, the doctors discover several suspicious lung foci in both lungs. Two months later, she died of lung cancer without any therapy being attempted.
Immunosuppressant accelerates cancer
In their study, Prof. Jean-Louis Pujol and his colleagues from the thoracic oncology unit and the medical imaging department of the Arnaud de Villeneuve Hospital (Montpellier) note that "the short delay between lung transplantation and the appearance of the first radiological abnormality suggests that carcinogenesis began during the life of the donor ". They add that the cancer of this patient has developed particularly fast because of its immunosuppressive treatment, which avoids rejection of the transplant.
The medical team recommends taking precautions in the case of organ donations from smokers so that "lung transplants from donors who were active smokers (or who have recently quit smoking) are considered with caution in that the emergence of lung cancer in the recipient is triggered by immunosuppressive therapy ".
