The city of Montpellier has created a partnership with the badociation SOS hepatitis but also with the doctors of the hepatitis network Languedoc Roussillon. Hepatitis C is a viral disease of the liver. It is transmitted by blood and if the patient is not treated he can develop serious diseases such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. The objective of this alliance is that in 2022 the 1700 Montpellier carriers (and who do not know) of this disease are cured (pathology must no longer exist in France in 2025, this is the deadline set by the Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn). For that, we must find the greatest number of people to bring them to a treatment that will allow their healing.
Better track the sick
The challenge by 2022 is to find the 1700 people who have hepatitis C without knowing it. "We realize today that we no longer need doctors for screening" observes Pascal Melin, president of SOS hepatitis federation. For him "Ideally, the healed Hepatitis C people will testify that healing is possible". The badociation SOS hepatitis recommends setting up social spaces to promote screening. "We want to communicate in universities and companies" says Pascal Melin. "The concept is to say we offer you screening and behind you know that there can be a cure" He says. By working in closed spaces the goal SOS hepatitis is to avoid "dilution of information". Better target to better diagnose.
More efficient treatments
The next step after screening is treatment, for the sick. Here too, things must change. "We will reverse the table" says Professor Georges Philippe Pageaux (CHU Montpellier). The current schema is obsolete. "It's too long for the patient to go to the doctor, then make an appointment to see a specialist" He explains. "Today we go to the patient, and as soon as the screening is done we can start the treatment" explains the doctors. The management of the disease has evolved. Instead of 3 months a few months ago, it only takes a week between screening and the start of treatment. Another positive point is the healing time. Once a year, it is now three to four months thanks to better quality drugs.
