That's it, the new Mazda3 has finished playing hide and seek. After signing some stealthy appearances on teasers and spy photos, the new Japanese compact enters the scene at the Los Angeles show.
As expected, it stands out first by attractive lines, especially on the five-door model. The result of a new interpretation of the Kodo design inaugurated in 2012 on the Mada6 and CX-5, the design of the new Mazda3 echoes that of the 2017 Kai Concept.
The profile is boosted by a leaking roofline and rear windows more or less point. The front has a gaping grille whose outlines highlight the chiseled headlights. The rear part may have less character, but it remains pleasant. Obviously, the Mazda3 sedan is a little less seductive, although the trunk seems pretty well integrated.
Like the body, the dashboard adopts a sleek style. It has a 8.8-inch center screen. According to Mazda, silence and tranquility reign in the cabin, thanks to important work done by its engineers in soundproofing.
If we believe the terms of the press release, the Mazda3 will be one of the most pleasant cars to drive in its segment. As expected, it will inaugurate the Skyactiv-X gasoline engine which, according to Mazda, combines the advantages of petrol and diesel engines. In other words, this block would offer the performance and approval of a gasoline, but consuming like a diesel, and this thanks to optimized combustion. It will benefit from a form of hybridization of which we know nothing for the moment, except that it is named M Hybrid System.
The range of engines will also include two other conventional gasoline 1.5 and 2.0 liters of displacement, and a diesel 1.8 liter. Both species can receive the M Hybrid system. A six-speed automatic transmission will be available alongside the six-speed mechanical gearbox as well. The power levels of the various engines are not yet communicated, nor the performance they deliver.
The new Mazda3 is based on a new generation Skyactiv architecture. It will have four-wheel drive and will resume the G-Vectoring Control Plus system, which improves the behavior by adjusting the braking and the amount of torque sent.
Finally, let us say that Mazda has not yet announced the launch date of the model, nor its rates.
