This year, 30% of French people must limit the use of heating at home for not having to pay too high bills, reveals a study of the National Observatory of fuel poverty. "Some households are faced with a dilemma: giving up other expenses to heat themselves properly or, on the contrary, resign themselves to being cold (15%)," says Arnaud Leroy, president of ONPE.
According to Catholic Relief, the median amount of unpaid bills increases in 2017 after a decline for two years to reach 789 euros. It has increased by € 189 for ten years before, "which is worrying," says the ONPE.
In 2017, 15% of French people report having suffered from the cold during the winter, for at least 24 hours. For 40% of them, the feeling of discomfort comes from poor insulation of their home and 28% from an insufficient heating system. Yet, "national and local actors are mobilizing. In 2018, the energy check was sent to 3.6 million households, "says Arnaud Leroy.
