Famous American TV presenter Oprah Winfrey lost her mother Vernita Lee. She died at the age of 83 on Thursday, November 22, 2018, Thanksgiving Day, in the family home in Winsconsin, USA.
The announcement of her death was confirmed by Oprah's family and niece, Alisha Hayes, who gave a little more detail on social media. According to a close source, a private and intimate ceremony will be organized in the coming days, as TMZ reports.
Vernita Lee was born on May 2, 1935, she worked all her life as a cleaning lady. After giving birth to her two daughters, Oprah Winfrey and Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, Vernita Lee was unable to raise them because at that time she was only 19 years old. Oprah Winfrey grew up with her maternal grandmother, while her half-sister Patricia was adopted. A few years later, Vernita Lee reconnected with Oprah Winfrey, 6 years old. The girl moved to live with her mother, who was then a stranger to her. As she revealed on her show, Oprah Winfrey was raped by several family members and a family friend at the age of nine.
Oprah explained that her relationship with her mother was difficult because of the long separation. But their relationship has finally improved. Oprah Winfrey had received her mother on the set of her own talk show in 1990.
Vernita is survived by Oprah and her sister Patricia Amanda Faye Lee and grandchildren Alisha Hayes, Chrishaunda Lee Perez, Aquarius Lofton and Andre Brown, and great-grandchildren Jaxon Praise Perez, Chai Theresa Perez, Donovan Hayes and Trinity Hayes. For the time being, a private funeral service has already taken place.
