According to a new study published by the online scientific journal eLife, researchers have determined that a special protein, BRD9, is essential for the growth and survival of synovial sarcoma cells. Laboratory experiments have proven that its neutralization could prevent the onset and development of tumors, said Gerard Brien, who led one of the teams at the Dana-Farber Cancer Research Center.
This study should pave the way for future research on how the degradation of BRD9 could be exploited to develop new treatments for the disease. And while it still seems so difficult to diagnose this cancer at the stage where it causes no symptoms, it would be possible to identify early-stage cases in patients who have risk factors.
Synovial sarcoma attacks soft tissues anywhere in the body, even in the brain and heart, but usually occurs near the knee. And although the development of the tumor does not necessarily cause noticeable symptoms at first, it can cause swelling, numbness or pain in case of pressure on the nerves.
