A 35-year-old woman from Côte-d'Or nearly became a quadriplegic after a worm lodged in her vertebrae, the magazine Sciences et Avenir quotes a report of the University Hospital Center of Dijon published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine .

Most often, when a worm is ingested, it infects the digestive system. Although unpleasant, this type of infection is usually treated by some drugs.

Compressed spinal cord

In this young woman, the infection could have turned into drama because the worm has migrated. He lodged in one of his vertebrae and compressed his spinal cord, threatening to make her tetraplegic.

The patient went to the emergency room after feeling weak and having suffered from vertigo and shock electric in the legs, reports the medical report.

An MRI of his spine revealed a lesion in one of his vertebrae. The cause ? Hydatidosis, a disease caused by the ingestion of eggs of Echinococcus granulosus

A worm that contaminates animals

This species of worm, also called "echinococcus dog", is a small tapeworm parasitic bowel of cattle pets. Humans are considered "accidental" hosts.

This type of worm is known to cause damage in the liver, lungs, as well as in the central nervous system and bones.

The infected vertebrae withdrawn

After a heavy operation, the young woman recovered. The doctors still removed the infected vertebra and inserted metal pieces to hold the vertebrae next to each other.

The patient also received a very powerful pest control to get rid of the unwelcome host forever. Nine months later, she is doing well
