A week after his moon landing, the Chinese probe Chang'e 4 sent to Earth his first panoramic images taken on the far side of the Moon. The photos were made using a topographic camera.
The Chinese probe Chang'e 4, which landed on January 3rd on the far side of the moon, sent first panoramic images of our satellite on Earth, announced the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA).
The 360 degree photo broadcast by the CNSA was taken using a topographic camera installed on the upper part of Chang'e 4. It is Quèqiáo, the satellite relay communications relay for the lunar rover, which transmitted the shot on Earth. Launched in May 2018, Quèqiáo was the first satellite to settle on the L2 Lagrange point of the Earth-Moon system. A location that allows the craft to observe both the hidden face of the Moon and the Earth.
The new image which, besides the lunar surface, also shows the Yutu-2 (Jade Rabbit 2) motorized robot as well as parts of the Chang'e 4, allowed researchers to badyze the landscape and terrain features of the Moon.
Unlike the face closest to the Earth, which is still facing our planet, no probe or exploration module had yet touched the ground on the other side. This one, mountainous and uneven, is strewn with craters.
On Thursday, the Jade Bunny 2 robot resumed its activities on the far side of the moon after a five-day hibernation to protect itself from the cold.
As for the Chang'e 4 probe, it was launched in early December with a Long March 3B rocket from the Xichang base.
