The Institut Curie has an integrated operating room with 11 rooms

11 rooms against 6 previously, 2700 m2 on a single floor against 1200 so far : this new operating theater becomes one of the largest in France, which will allow Institut Curie to welcome more patients. "More than 12,000 people are already operated every year on the Paris site, including more than 5,000 for bad cancer, but also 800 interventions for ENT, digestive, gynecological or ophthalmological tumors, more than 200 skin cancers and 180 sarcomas and other complex tumors, not to mention the 2,000 poses of implantable sites ", explains Pr Nathalie Cbadoux, Head of the Department of Surgery

In addition to its size , it is especially its "integrated" aspect that catches the eye . In other words, it groups all the spaces involved in the surgical activity together: patient reception, operating theaters, recovery room and staff cloakrooms. This integration also promotes a smoother and therefore safer course for patients and easier working conditions for professionals.
This new operating theater is designed to receive patients in optimal conditions. The new organization minimizes wait times and significantly improves comfort, including outpatient surgery, which is about half of all surgeries today. These patients can undress in the dedicated unit before being accompanied, on foot, by a stretcher to the block.
The rooms, designed and equipped by the company Maquet, are scalable: partitions and ceilings are fully modular , which allows, if necessary to perform work virtually without interrupting the service. Each operating room is equipped with a Tegris video system that allows images to be displayed on large wall or hanging screens . The surgeon can thus access the patient's medical file and in particular his imaging examinations throughout the procedure.
A camera films the operating field or is connected to the surgical microscope to allow the nurses to ward and anesthesiologists to follow the course of the intervention. These images can also be routed outside, for example, to an amphitheater for educational purposes.
"This vast and very ambitious project was conducted as part of the MC21 project and mobilized 10 million d'euros " explains Professor Thierry Philip, chairman of the Curie Institute's board of directors. The opening of this new operating theater is part of a larger investment plan of 170 million euros, financed by the Institut Curie, to enable by 2022 the complete renovation of the entire complex. its research and treatment buildings and the construction of new surfaces on each of its 3 sites, in Paris, Saint-Cloud and Orsay. This vast real estate program is itself at the heart of the MC21 project, which aims to invent 21st century oncology by making the Institut Curie a world-clbad Comprehensive Cancer Center.
