It is necessary to wash before wearing it for the first time any clothing likely to be in contact with the skin, underlines an opinion of the health agency Anses on the risks of allergies and irritations cutaneous due to the textile. A switch to a machine reduces exposure to
chemicals such as nonylphenols, "which are both skin irritants, toxic to reproduction and
endocrine disruptors, "says Christophe Rousselle of the National Health Security Agency (ANSES).

This Wednesday published an expert report with a series of recommendations to" better protect consumers from the risk of allergies and skin irritations ", regularly reported to the health authorities. If an irritation or allergy reaction occurs after the purchase of shoes or clothing, consider consulting a doctor or dermato-allergist to identify the possible responsible substance, adds the head of the Hazards Pole. substances at ANSES

A "pioneering" study

The Agency is conducting a study until October with doctors (dermato-allergists, toxicologists) and patients, for the identification of irritating substances in cause. The first phase of this "pioneering" study was carried out between January and September 2017 with about thirty adult patients.

Analyzes of some forty new articles helped to refine the families of chemical substances in investigate and confirm, among other things, the presence of nonylphenols or formaldehyde. They also allowed the identification of substances that are not systematically searched for routinely, while they may lead to contact dermatitis, such as PPD (paraphenylene diamine).

Technical recommendations

ANSES recommends in particular to the authorities to lower the regulatory maximum of chromium 6 in leather goods. She has indeed observed allergic reactions below the "regulatory threshold". It would also be a question of fixing a maximum for nickel in textiles, even though it does not exist.

In addition, it recommends that those responsible for the marketing of footwear and clothing "ensure from their suppliers of the absence of CMR substances [cancérogènes, mutagènes, toxiques pour la reproduction] or sensitizing or irritating cutaneous in the articles. "
