Box Score: Florida State 68, Notre Dame 61

It was not convincing, it was not pretty and, for a moment, it did not seem to happen at all.

But Florida's No. 17 men's basketball team strengthened its defense in the second half and played enough big games to hold Notre Dame, 68-61, Monday night at the Tucker Center.

The Seminoles, who were only playing a day off after Saturday's unbalanced defeat in North Carolina, improved to 22-6 overall and 10-5 in the game of ACC. The fighting Irish fell to 13-15, 3-12.

Notre Dame, who struggled from the perimeter for most of the season, caught fire in the first half and continued this trend early in the second. The Irish at one point had hit 8 of the 15 shots after 3 points, although they only entered the game at 31.5% of the depth.

But Florida State, who played a good part of the game, fared better in the second half and came back to take a 57-55 advantage with just over six minutes to play. The Seminoles then extended their lead to 62-57, when Terance Mann flew to snap the missed 3-point ball for his teammate.

Punctual guard Trent Forrest then hit two free throws to bring the FSU's lead back to 65-61 with 35 seconds to go.

Guard, rookie Devin Vassell, scored 13 points on the bench. He hit 5 of 6 field shots and 3 of 3 in the 3-point range. The Seminoles also received 12 from Christ Koumadje and 10 from Mfiondu Kabengele.

Our Dams missed his last six shots by 3 points.

The USF will now have the rest of the week to prepare for the visit of N.C. state Saturday.
