NEW YORK (AP) – Add travel to activities that vaccinated Americans can once again enjoy, according to new U.S. guidelines released Friday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated their guidelines to say that fully vaccinated people can travel to the United States without getting tested for the coronavirus or going into quarantine afterwards.
Previously, the agency had warned of unnecessary travel, even for those vaccinated, but noted that it would update its guidelines as more people get vaccinated and evidence shows. would gather on the protection that vaccines offer.
“Every day you get more data and you change your advice based on existing data,” said Dr. Ali Khan, dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska.
Khan said the update strengthens the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and is another incentive for people to get vaccinated.
According to the CDC, nearly 100 million people in the United States – or about 30% of the population – have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. A person is considered fully immunized two weeks after receiving the last required dose of vaccine.
Unvaccinated people are always advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
The new guide says:
– Fully vaccinated people can travel to the United States without getting tested for the coronavirus or quarantine. People should always wear a mask, get away socially and avoid crowds, the agency says.
– For international travel, the agency says those vaccinated do not need to take a COVID-19 test before leaving, although some destinations may require it.
– People who have been vaccinated should always test negative for COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States and be tested three to five days after returning home. They don’t need to quarantine. The agency noted the potential introduction of virus variants and differences in vaccine coverage across the world for the cautious advice on overseas travel.
The CDC cited recent research on the real effects of vaccines for its updated advice. Already, the agency had said fully vaccinated people could visit each other inside without wearing masks or social distancing. He also said that vaccinated people can visit unvaccinated people in the same household under similar conditions, provided that unvaccinated people are at low risk of serious illness if infected.
The United States began its vaccine deployment in mid-December. The first vaccines – from Pfizer and Moderna – require two doses a few weeks apart. A one-shot vaccine from Johnson & Johnson received the green light from regulators in late February.
