Faced with soaring gasoline prices in California, drivers are paying more at the pump in San Luis Obispo County than in almost every other region of the country. [Cal Coast Times]
Starting Saturday morning, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the county of SLO is $ 4,197, according to AAA. Only four counties in California, all with less than 20,000 inhabitants, currently have average gasoline prices higher than those in SLO County.
In the counties of Los Angeles and San Francisco, where drivers often pay more at the pump, the average price of gasoline is currently $ 4,078 and $ 4,163. At the state level, the average is $ 4,028, more than a dollar more than the national average of $ 2,842.
Gasoline prices have risen in California in recent weeks, with state drivers now paying the highest amount at the pump since July 2014. A month ago, the average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $ 3,374.
AAA attributes the sharp increase in the price of gasoline in California largely to planned and unplanned maintenance upgrades and repairs at refineries. Recently, six of the 10 refineries in California saw their production, including gasoline, reduced as a result of maintenance and repairs.
Imports are helping to replenish gasoline in California while refineries are being repaired, but transportation costs have increased and additional costs have been transferred to the consumer. In addition, there is currently a switch to more expensive summer blending gasoline, resulting in higher prices across the country.
