The differences between the XS versions are manageable and barely justify the extra charge for many customers: while Apple sells the iPhone XR from 849 euros, it is the iPhone XS the cheapest from 1 149 euros, or 300 euros extra. The tested 128GB version costs 909 euros.

The design of the iPhone XR is similar to that of the iPhone XS, but in detail, there is quite a difference: the material of the XS is not stainless steel, but in a aluminum case. However, Apple continues to rely on, among other things, the return of the glbad to allow wireless charging. In addition, Apple offers the iPhone XR in more colors than the iPhone XS: you can choose between six colors: blue, white, black, yellow, coral and red.

For the iPhone XS and XS Max, Apple has upgraded its IP68 protection against water and dust, and the iPhone XR is IP67 certified. Specifically, this means that the most expensive iPhones can survive up to 30 minutes at a depth of 2 meters, while the iPhone XR can withstand a maximum of 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. In case of water damage expires according to Apple nevertheless the guarantee.

The iPhone XR lies in the size between the iPhone XS and the XS Max: the iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch screen and is therefore slightly larger and more bulky as the smallest iPhone XS. Also on the iPhone 8 and all previous iPhones, such screens were used. OLEDs promise more vivid colors and blacker black, but the quality of LCD screens built by Apple is very good.

The resolution is despite the considerable screen diagonal of 1792 × 828 pixels – the pixel density is 326 ppi than that of the iPhone 8, but is significantly lower than that of the iPhone XS (458 dpi). For everyday use, sharpness should not be a major problem. What is striking is only if we look more closely and in direct comparison with the XS models: the color and contrast of the XR are not as strong, the black is rather greyish and the texts do not appear not so clear. In addition, the edges of the screen are much wider than in high-end models.

In terms of maximum brightness, the iPhone XR achieved a new record among the iPhone by displaying a checkerboard contrast image with a rounding of 719 candelas per square meter. This allows you to easily read the display, even in direct sunlight. The color gamut is roughly equivalent to that of the XS models: the iPhone XR covers about 139% of the standard RGB color space. This is a good value for money LCD monitor.

Unlike the iPhone XS (Max), the XR does not have 3D Touch function, so the screen can not differentiate strong or weak pressure. This feature has been used especially for shortcuts to apps and apparently only so little attracted rumors that Apple would have rumors for next year without more than an iPhone. Almost no one will miss 3D Touch.

Apple does not repeat the mistake of the past, when the company simultaneously introduced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c and equipped the cheapest iPhones with obsolete hardware. The iPhone XR also features the 7 nanometer Bionic Aion processor. It has six cores, two of them are very strong, four comparatively effective. All can be active at the same time. On the side are 3 GB of RAM.

Our website tests the phone in 0.14 seconds, fast Android phones require 4.6 (Huawei Mate 20) on 15.8 seconds (Galaxy S9 Duos) up to nearly 26 seconds (HTC Desire 12). Graphics performance is also extremely robust: in off-screen testing of the GFX-Bench graphics test, which measures the gross performance of the graphics chip, the iPhone XR is up to 50% faster than the Galaxy Note 9 of Samsung.

The iPhone XR is really a hit and surpbades the performance of the iPhone 8. Games can be even more complex and the most demanding applications and websites work very quickly and smoothly.

The iPhone XR has only one lens on the back and, unlike the iPhone XS, no telephoto lens. The resolution is 12 megapixels, an aperture of f / 1.8 is installed, and portrait mode support with depth of field is also included. In addition, the XR player can record slow motion video at 240 frames per second and videos stabilized at 4K resolution.

The test lab photos show that Apple's iPhone XR also plays a leading role in terms of photo quality. Only two of the five portrait effects offered by the iPhone XS and the optical zoom allowed by the telephoto lens are missing. The colors are perfect and structures such as hair or yarn are clearly visible in the photos – even in dim lighting. Texts and fine details are also very well honed.

The bokeh effect, which is currently almost indispensable in a smartphone camera, is possible via software, both with the front camera and the main camera, as well as with the camera. with XS models. Nevertheless, the XR only works with a real face. The other elements do not recognize the camera and therefore can not be highlighted, unlike the iPhone XS (Max).

The notch on the front of the XR contains the 7-megapixel front camera and several sensors needed for facial recognition of faces. We are very satisfied with both the quality of the selfie and the speed of facial recognition.

Dual SIM and iOS 12

The iPhone XR also has a special dual SIM function: a combination of a physical nano SIM and an eSIM ("e" means "embedded"). The latter must be supported by the supplier. The dual-SIM variant will only be available in Germany after an update – initially only at Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone, and later also at O2. Cheap discount providers do not yet have eSIM. As it remains exciting, Apple will manage to spread quickly and widely the eSIM?

The iPhone XR runs on the latest version of the iOS 12 operating system. The home screen is always accessible with an erasing from the bottom finger up. In terms of equipment, Apple does not provide any surprises. In addition, the iPhone XR lacks a slot for MicroSD cards and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Even a matching Lightning adapter is not in the box. You do not have to go without a powerful, fast-charging AC adapter, paid for more by Apple. Those who hear without headphones get a loud and rich bbad sound. From time to time, the stereo speaker sounds a little tiny, because Google Pixel 3 is better by comparison.

The iPhone XR transmits with a maximum data transfer rate of 1,000 Mbit per second. In addition to fast connection, AC-WLAN also incorporates Bluetooth 5.0 technology, which is twice as fast as Bluetooth 4.2 LE (low power consumption) for short-distance connections (around 2 Mbit / s) or at the expense of the transfer rate. In the absence of terminals, you will not benefit from Bluetooth 5.0 from October 2018.

Our 128GB test device offers approximately 122GB of free storage space. Apple sells the iPhone XR in variants with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB of storage space, while the iPhone XS is also lush with 512GB of storage space. In times of streaming music and videos and photos in the cloud, most users will not need the biggest storage option anyway. The small version costs 849 euros in Germany. For the central variant, Apple requires 909 euros, the most expensive version costs 1019 euros.

In the end, Apple offers the iPhone XR an iPhone with current design and additional color options, with the latest equipment (except the display) and good photo quality. The differences with the iPhone XS (Max) are irrelevant, especially for everyday use. At the same time, the iPhone XR is significantly cheaper than the iPhone XS (Max). If the low resolution of the iPhone XR bothers you, you should take a look at Android smartphones such as the OnePlus 6. This comes with an OLED display and a higher resolution.
