Two rare astronomical constellations can be seen late at night in the night sky over Germany: the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century and a huge, very close to the Earth Mars. As an astronomical addition, the ISS flies in time for the climax of the sky show
Answers to the most important questions about the event of the century.
What can we see when?
From when the lunar eclipse is observed, depends on the place of residence. In Berlin the moon rises to 20,58, to Hamburg to 21,17, to Cologne to 21,18, to Frankfurt-on -Hand at 21:06 Clock, in Leipzig at 20.57 and in Munich at 20.47 clock. When the moon rises, where can be read here.
When the moon rises in Germany, the lunar eclipse has already begun. But it will take a few more minutes for the moon to plunge completely into the shadow of the Earth and reach the total eclipse.
When the moon rises, it will appear clearly reddish, hence the name Blood Moon. A little south of the moon, Mars will be visible. Initially, both are close to the horizon, but rise slightly higher during the night.

The maximum eclipse occurs at 22:22. A few minutes later, around 22:30, the International Space Station (ISS) will appear in the sky, moving east and appearing brighter than any star. The show lasts about six minutes. After midnight you will see the moon leave the shadow of the Earth. It becomes more and more clear. At 1:30 in the morning, the moon has completely left the darkness
Then it will take a few minutes to the moon to fully immerse in the shadow of the Earth and start the total lunar eclipse. The middle of total darkness is reached at 22.22 and the end at around 23.13. "The moon is noticeably redder and darker," says astronomer Carolin Liefke of the VdS and the Heidelberg Astronomy House. "It is clear and obvious that he looks different from the usual."
Where should we look in the sky?
The people of the south and east of Germany have the best chance of observing the lunar eclipse, because the moon rises earlier in the east. and that it is highest in the south above the horizon. No matter where, it is important to look towards the horizon in a southeast direction – also largely free from artificial light sources. At the center of the total lunar eclipse, Mars is visible about six degrees south of the moon, just above the horizon. Then you can try to photograph the two together.
What are the weather forecasts for the night?
High summer temperatures and mainly clear visibility are expected. In the southeast and east, however, the clouds make visibility difficult, as explained by meteorologist Sebastian Schappert of the German meteorological service of Offenbach. In some places, there may even be showers with heavy rain and thunderstorms. In the west and the north is to be expected with the tropical nights – it's over 20 degrees. In the evening, 25 to 27 degrees are still there.
What happens to the moon?
A lunar eclipse occurs only at the full moon, when the sun, the earth, and the moon are lined up. The moon plunges completely into the shadows that the sunlit earth throws into space.
On Friday, the complete eclipse phase lasts one hour and 43 minutes, the longest of the century. This duration is surpbaded only at lunar eclipse on June 9, 2123 – about three minutes. "With that, she almost reached the maximum possible time of an hour and 47 minutes," says Liefke
Why does the moon in the shadow of the earth shine from coppery red to orange?
While the short-wave blue light waves of the sun's rays are completely dispersed by the Earth's atmosphere, the long-wave red light is refracted and directed to the moon. As a result, the moon glows reddish and we also called the moon of blood.
Why is Mars so bright and so red?
Mars is as close to Earth as it is rare at this time. It's only about 58 million kilometers away from our planet. This is the minimum distance. Unlike Earth, Mars does not need it on its orbit farther around the Sun, but nearly two years. When the Earth exceeds Mars on the inner orbit and Mars is relatively close to the Sun, it is particularly bright in the sky and relatively large. Finally, Mars was so close to us 15 years ago
Is this really an event of the century?
A total lunar eclipse is not an absolute exception, statistically speaking, it can be observed every two to three years – but not always completely. The peculiarity of this total lunar eclipse is that it lasts a long time. The moon will be completely in the shadow of the earth for more than an hour and forty minutes.
A total lunar eclipse of similar length and exactly the same state of Mars occurs on average every 105,000 years, as Stefan Krause's calculations show the Bonn public observatory. At the same time that even the ISS is flying through the sky, there will probably never be another one again.
