Luka Modric led Croatia into the World Cup final with a strong performance, but could not avoid 2-4 defeat to France. In the end, however, was the biggest success story in Croatian football – and Modric, who played the seven games for the fire, at least can console himself with the gold ball. Antoine Griezmann (France) finished third, the Belgian Eden Hazard.
Modric, 32, follows Lionel Messi, who was voted best player in Brazil four years ago. It is named after Paolo Rossi (1982), Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci (1990), Oliver Kahn (2002) and Zinedine Zidane (2006) and the fifth European to receive this honor. Other winners included Diego Maradona (1986), Romario (1994), Ronaldo (1998) and Diego Forlan (2010).
The young player's trophy remains in the hands of the French
The best young player's money ball went to Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, third youngest player in the World Cup final 19 years and 207 days. The disciples were only the 1958 Brazilian Pelé in Sweden (17 years and 249 days) and the Italian Giuseppe Bergomi 1982 in Spain (18 years and 201 days). The prize has been awarded only since 2006 and until now it has only gone in Germany – Lukas Podolski (2006) and Thomas Müller (2010) – or in France: Paul Pogba won the Young Player Award four years ago.
The best goalkeeper was Belgium's Thibaut Courtois, who finished third Saturday and now succeeds Manuel Neuer. The German international goalkeeper was honored as the best goalkeeper in 2014.
