In the spectacular finale of the stage queen of the Tour de France this year, the Italian Vincenzo Nibali was the unlucky man. Just five kilometers from the finish, the winner of the 2014 Tour crashed as a result of a collision with a motorcycle police. At the time, Nibali had a good chance in the fighter squad around Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin, who ended up winning the day.

Immediately after Nibali fell to the ground, Froome jumped. As the others followed and fed, Nibali had to get back on the bike. Despite intense pain, he tormented himself until the last leg of Alpe d'Huez and finished seventeenth, just 13 seconds behind winner Thomas.

After the leg, Nibali was taken to the hospital. There, the doctors found that he had broken his tenth thoracic vertebra in his fall. This confirms both the 33-year-old and his Bahrain-Merida team.

Due to the injury, the tour is over for Nibali. In the overall standings, he finished fourth, 2:37 minutes behind Thomas. On Friday, Italians should be brought home and be the subject of more in-depth investigations. Nibali also won the Vuelta (2010) and twice the Giro d 'Italia (2013, 2016) in addition to the Tour de France.
