From 1 August, all fishing activities in the country will be banned following a directive from the Ministry of Fisheries and of aquaculture.

The directive of the Minister of Fisheries has aroused the fury of some fishermen. in the coastal belt of the Greater Accra region, which says that the ban will not only affect the annual Homowo celebration, but will also increase the cost of fish in the country.

Up to now, there have been threats of demonstration in the various fishing ports. as a large part of the fishermen have threatened a demonstration on development.

Meanwhile, the sector minister says she still stands by this move. She rather urged fishermen to resort to improving the sanitary situation along the beaches. The minister said that the collection and sale of plastic bags could be the best remedy during the ban.

Some fishermen feel insulted by a suggestion from the Minister of Fisheries to collect plastic for the closed fishing season. They say that they are not mentally handicapped men and women to pick up plastic waste.
