Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed a decree on Monday to remove all National Guard troops from his state on the South American border with Mexico. Wisconsin troops have been stationed in Arizona since last June. Currently, 112 soldiers work in border security.
Evers, a Democrat, exercised his authority as commander-in-chief of his state's national guard to revoke the order to send the militia to the southern border by former Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
According to the Evers executive order, President Donald Trump issued a memo in April 2018 directing the Secretary of Defense to support domestic security in border protection. The Ministry of Defense then approved Title 32 of the National Guard units in the Southern Border States to enhance the security of DHS efforts.
Then-Gov. Walker sent troops to the border on June 21, 2018, when Arizona asked for additional troops, according to the Associated Press.
The US government closed down on December 22, 2018, when Republicans and congressional Democrats could not agree on a temporary spending bill that would fund Trump's proposed $ 5.7 billion wall. Once the government reopened, a bipartite committee reached an agreement that included less than a quarter of Trump's wishes. The president has declared a national emergency to obtain funding for its barrier.
However, Evers said there was no urgency on the southern border, which triggered his order to bring Wisconsin troops home.
"There is simply not enough evidence to support the president's assertion of a national security crisis on the southwestern border. Therefore, nothing justifies the continued presence of members of the Wisconsin National Guard at the border, "said Evers.
Evers is not the first governor to bring back troops from the National Border Guard, with the governors of New Mexico and California having made the same orders earlier this month, according to the hill.
Although the US Congress has granted the president nearly $ 1.4 billion in funding, Trump has declared a national emergency. Sixteen states sued the White House, saying Trump's statement was a way around Congress.
