Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Wednesday signed an executive order calling for the preservation of 30% of New Mexico’s public lands by 2030, bringing the state into line with a larger federal conservation effort.
The order orders half a dozen state agencies to join together behind the effort by establishing programs that conserve, protect and improve public lands for a variety of uses.
“There is no future without nurturing our watersheds, our lands, our forests, and doing so in a responsible way that will last for generations to come,” said Lujan Grisham before signing the order. at the Roundhouse.
A broad coalition applauded the order, including environmentalists, tribal leaders, local governments and outdoor recreation advocates.
The agencies will meet quarterly to assess the state’s progress and submit an annual report to the governor.
This effort aligns with President Joe Biden’s “America the Beautiful” initiative which aims to conserve and restore 30% of the country’s land by 2030.
