NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Health officials in New York City have closed two more schools in Brooklyn to contain the measles epidemic.
The virus, once considered eliminated, has now spread to 22 states. It is the largest epidemic in a quarter of a century, with at least 704 confirmed cases.
The city said the schools – Tiferes Bnos and Talmud Tora D'Nitra – had failed to comply with the order of the health commissioner to remove unvaccinated children.
Five other schools had already been closed but have since reopened after submitting a corrective action plan. The last two will have to do the same.
In addition, the city began sending summonses to 57 people who did not comply with the emergency order.

The majority of current measles cases are in New York, despite the relentless efforts of health officials and other leaders to vaccinate everyone.
"The backflow comes mainly from the antivaxeurs. They are very strong, they are very noisy, they are also very ignorant, "said Monday Ed Day, Rockland County Executive.
Feeling helpless in the face of the eight-month-old crisis in Rockland, Day and the county health commissioner clashed Monday in the state capital, calling for help from legislatures and lobbying for a project ending all non-medical immunization exemptions.
"This is exactly the kind of action here," said Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, Rockland County Health Commissioner.
"We see people enjoying it, not because of their religious beliefs, but because they believe in junk food," added Senator David Carlucci.

Carlucci, who represents the counties of Rockland and Westchester, believes that this loophole is fueling the spread of the epidemic.
Rockland currently has 202 confirmed cases of measles. There were 423 cases in Queens and Brooklyn.
