Several Oregon healthcare workers stranded in the snow have decided to offer coronavirus vaccinations to their fellow stranded drivers so that the vaccines do not go to waste.
The New York Times reported that Public Health Director Michael Weber of Josephine County, Oregon got stuck in a snowstorm in the middle of the freeway with doses of the vaccine expected to expire in six hours.
Weber and other public health officials were taking doses of the Moderna vaccine at Grants Pass, which was about 30 miles from where they were.
When Weber and his team realized they could be stranded on the road for hours, they decided to offer the vaccines to the drivers stranded around them.
Most of the drivers refused the shot due to the unusual nature of the situation. Although Weber added that there was a doctor and an ambulance on the scene to oversee the administration of the vaccine.
“We had one person who was so happy he took his shirt off and jumped out of the car,” Weber said.
“It was a strange conversation,” Weber added. “Imagine being stuck on the side of the road in a snowstorm and someone coming up and saying, ‘Hey. Would you like a bullet in the arm? “
The team eventually gave six doses of the vaccine on the snowy highway, according to the Times.
Weber was happy that part of the supply was not wasted.
“Our number one rule right now is that nothing is wasted,” he said.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States had administered a total of 26,193,682 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
