ESCANABA – The Gladstone Braves football teams set a historic school record by beating rival Escanaba in all three grid games. First it was the Braves junior team that won 21-7 over Escanaba, then the Braves JV defeated the Eskymos 24-0 and followed by Gladstone High School’s 30-15 clash over Escanaba.
Over the years, Escanaba has dominated the series between the Braves and the Eskymos, but that all changed when the Braves rewrote Gladstone’s football history book.
The unbeaten 3-0-1 Braves JV lit up the scoreboard on a 39-yard screen from John Soderman to Elliot Vitito to take an 8-0 lead.
Gladstone scored 16-0 when Kaden Gibbs scored, and Drake Johnson caught him for the two-pointer.
At the start of the last quarter, the Braves struck again. After a big defensive game from the Braves Koysta Olsen.
Gladstone picked up his own 13-yard line and quarterback Vitito threw an 87-yard touchdown pass to Casey Alworden. Gibbs added the two points again as the Braves coached by Craig Ness won 24-0.
It was a total team effort for the Braves as Trenton Cartwright and Issac Ketchum led many good plays.
Brett Labre made big points for the Eskymos, while Colten Carter and Chase Cloutier also made big plays.
Gladstone had previously beaten Calumet and Menominee as he played tied with Kingsford.
The Junior High Braves under coach Tom Gereau – before defeating Manistique 38-24 – opened their season by beating Escanaba 21-7 to remain unbeaten at 2-0.
Newcomer to the Braves, Andrew Howes – a transfer from Holy Name – fits well into the program, scoring the Braves’ first touchdown.
The game remained close throughout the first half, with Gladstone leading 6-0 at half-time. Two big second-half scoring plays by Trevor Thorbahn, one of a 42-yard run followed by a 50-yard run, led the Braves to pay the dirt.
Miles Vitito’s big clearances kept Escanaba deep in his own turf for most of the game. Cooper Sanville, Matt Hagebusch and Owen Gereau all played well for the Braves.
Braun Keagan scored Escanaba’s only touchdown.
Graham Johnson Lucas DeGrand and Lennox Peacock have been in many good games.
Against Manistique, the Junior Braves fell 12-0 behind, but after a defensive adjustment, the Braves started rolling as quarterback Owen Gereau – along with Thorbahn – scored two touchdowns, Tre Brunette also scoring.
