Hubble Chronicles Lightening a ring around an exploded star

[ad_1]

This accelerated video footage of the Hubble Space Telescope reveals dramatic changes in a material ring around the exploded Supernova 1987A star.

The images, taken from 1994 to 2016, show the effects of a shock wave coming from the explosion of the supernova that crashed into the ring. The ring begins to light up when the shock wave hits it. The ring is about a year-light.

Discovered in 1987, Supernova 1987A is the closest observed supernova to Earth since 1604. The exploded star lies 163,000 light-years away in the Great Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way.
