Illinois COVID live update today: IL reports 12,542 new coronavirus cases, 125 deaths

CHICAGO (WLS) – Illinois public health officials reported 12,542 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 as well as 125 deaths on Tuesday.

The total number of cases in Illinois now stands at 738,846, with a total of 12,403 deaths.

Over a 24-hour period, officials said the state processed 116,081 specimens. A total of 10,614,079 samples have been tested since the start of the pandemic in Illinois.

The state-wide seven-day pre-test positivity from Nov. 24 to 30 is 12.2 percent.

As of Sunday evening, 5,835 people in Illinois were reportedly hospitalized for COVID-19. Of these, 1,195 patients were in intensive care with COVID-19 and 721 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

Six regions in Illinois – Regions 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 – are currently below the ICU bed availability target. And while overall the number of hospitalizations has improved slightly, there are still many areas of the state that are still struggling with bed availability. Regions 4 and 7 remain below the 20% capacity target for the availability of hospital beds.

After millions flew out for Thanksgiving, Gov. JB Pritzker has founded any hopes of easing restrictions.

“No region will be downgraded from our current Tier 3 mitigation measures for the next few weeks, even though they may be on track to meet these parameters,” Governor Pritzker said.

Governor Pritzker said the state needs the next few weeks to assess whether there will be an increase in the number of new cases resulting from all vacation travel and family reunions.

“The hope now is that we can postpone the push into the next few weeks to arrive at a healthier holiday in the second half of December,” Governor Pritzker said.

Ahead of Monday’s briefing, Governor Pritzker said he was in a phone conversation with Vice President Michael Pence and members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force to discuss plans to deploy a vaccine , if and when a vaccine is approved for emergency use.

The state is still awaiting final guidance from the CDC on how the rollout of the first available vaccines will unfold, but the details of the distribution will be left to the governors. Governor Pritzker said the state plans to announce a tiered plan later this week.
