When American researchers examined the effects of loneliness and social isolation on health, they found that people with poor social relationships had an increased risk of premature death by 50% compared to those with good social relations.
By examining 218 studies, they found that social isolation further increased the risk of death than obesity, increasing the risk of death by 30%.

Another study published in 2018 indicates that nearly half of Americans feel lonely, with youth in particular being the most affected.
