Is sugar the same as an addiction to cocaine and heroin?

Insulin causes an increase in fat storage.

HARIANACEH.co.id, JAKARTA – Sugar is considered an enemy of health. Sugar can infiltrate, create dependency and harm health. The problem is not the sugar you consume, but the insulin reaction it produces pushes blood glucose to the thirsty cells.

Postponed on topics Tuesday (6/11), emergency doctor and general practitioner Tom Mulholland said all foods had what is called the glycemic index (GI). Basically, how fast sugar in food and drink is released into the bloodstream.

Mulholland explained, low GI foods are better because the sugar is released slowly. This creates fewer insulin spikes. The faster the insulin reacts, the faster the blood sugar drops, which causes hunger and sleepiness.

Insulin also causes an increase in fat storage and promotes the penetration of potbadium and magnesium into the cells. The cells then become insulin resistant and require more of the same response. The more stored fat, the more resistance there is.

The pancreas that produces insulin becomes tired and begins to fail. Blood sugar levels increase, damaging small blood cells in the eyes, feet and kidneys. A person becomes blind, needs dialysis and is amputated from parts of the body. That's how type 2 diabetes is born.

Type 1 diabetes is a different type. It usually occurs at a young age and is caused by non-diet factors. Like the immune system that attacks you. As pancreatic insulin producing cells are destroyed, children and adults of type 1 must measure their blood sugar and inject insulin all their lives.

While the causes of type 1 diabetes are uncertain, type 2 is caused by lifestyle factors and genetic factors. Whatever the type, uncontrolled diabetes causes a major disaster.

Mulholland, a 30-year-old New Zealand doctor, said 200,000 New Zealanders had type 2 diabetes and more than 100,000 did not know it.

"According to our estimates, more than 3,000 people randomly tested in supermarkets, stables and remote islands in New Zealand estimate that 200,000 have type 2 diabetes and do not know it," Mulholland said.

He said that the best way to discover a person with diabetes or the quality of control is to test HBA1C. It measures how much red blood cells have been sticky in the last three months. Below 40 mmol / mol of green light is lit, 40 to 50 mmol / mole of orange light is lit for prediabetes and more than 50 mmol / mol may be diabetes.

Mulholland explained that the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes is very important in reducing the individual and community level of sugar burden. Sugar is addictive, such as cocaine and heroin, and is added to foods to enhance taste.

"The myth is that eating fat makes you fat, fat is not good for heart health, but it's not the cause of our obesity epidemic." It's sugar, sugar and sugar. "It's hard not to eat sugar when it's everywhere and poorly advertised," he said.

He said, energy drinks do not give you energy. Sugar causes tiredness, blindness, dialysis and amputation. Sugar became a cigarette, as it was 60 years ago, when doctors prescribed it to fight against anxiety.

"Can you imagine young children walking down a traffic lane while handing out cigarettes like they do with sweets?" Why give candies to our kids as snacks that damage their teeth, eyes and kidneys? Asked Mulholland.

The doctor in charge of the global health mission added that the flow was changing but not fast enough. He suggested checking HBA1C and sugar consumption.

"Do you really need sugar in your tea or coffee? Your pancreas and your small blood vessels will scream, please, no," he said.
