American researchers are not the only ones looking for alternative tobacco products. The Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) is also conducting research on alternative tobacco products.

LIPI uses an economic model approach to examine in depth the potential and impact of alternative tobacco products on the community. Erman Aminullah, a researcher at LIPI, said it was important to see this product globally or comprehensively in order to get a complete understanding.

"The research we are doing is in the areas of health, regulation, technology, and society, and all of these important and interactive areas are linked to one another. Smoking decreases. "Quitting efforts are increasing in Indonesia," said Erman.

Alternative tobacco products, such as non-flammable heated tobacco products, electric cigarettes, nicotine paste and snuss constitute a form of development of technological innovation. Alternative tobacco products do not use the combustion process and do not replace it with a heating process.

By heating, the content of TAR compounds formed from the combustion can be eliminated. TAR is the most dangerous compound in cigarettes.

The Foundation's researcher for the Public Health Observer (YPKP), Amaliya, wants more and more research on alternative tobacco products in Indonesia. The government should base its research on the formulation of alternative regulations on tobacco products in accordance with their level of risk and profile.

"With the results of existing and ongoing research, we hope that Indonesia will be the country that will lead research on alternative tobacco products, particularly in the ASEAN region," Amaliya concluded.
