The ESB will deploy 50 new electric car charging stations nationwide, offering up to 100 km of electric range in just six minutes.

The new hubs are part of an investment of 20 million euros on the ESB e-cars network, which will also upgrade 50 existing hubs.

Hubs can load between two and eight vehicles simultaneously.

Peter O. Shea, head of institutional and regulatory affairs at ESB, said the four-year program would begin in the fall.

On RTE's Morning Ireland, he said: "Electricity generation is responsible for 20% of our total greenhouse gas emissions and transportation is also responsible for 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions. While production emissions are declining, emissions are rising.

"So, if we can decarbonize electricity and we are making great strides – by the end of next year, 40% of our electricity will be decarbonized – and electrifying our transportation, we can then make a big step towards Ireland's greenhouse gas reduction goals ".

Mr. O. Shea said that half of the funding would come from the government's Climate Action Fund and the rest of BSE's own resources.

Although the charging network is free at the moment, the new fast charging points will be charged, although Mr O. Shea said he could not give details at the moment.
