The Food and Drug Administration wants to facilitate the sale of some common nonprescription drugs.
The agency has proposed new guidelines Tuesday for drug manufacturers who want to spend prescription drugs at the counter.
In a statement, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the agency was evaluating ways to ensure inappropriate over-the-counter medication. This could include adding information about the label of packaging and mobile apps to help people decide if a drug is right for them.
Drug manufacturers should conduct studies showing that these strategies allow consumers to choose a safe drug.
Many over-the-counter medications widely used originally were only available on prescription, including Claritin allergy treatment and Prilosec stomach burn remedy.
