Robert De Niro appealed for privacy after leaving his wife, Grace Hightower, 21 years old.
In a statement to People According to the magazine, the 75-year-old actor: "Grace and I have two beautiful children together.We are entering a transition period in our relationship which is a difficult but constructive process."
"I pay tribute to Grace as a wonderful mother and ask for the privacy and respect of all as we develop our roles as partners in parenthood," he added.
Hightower, 63, is the father of his son Elliott, 20, and his six-year-old daughter Helen Grace.
De Niro had already filed for Hightower's divorce in 1999, but the couple reconciled and renewed his vows in 2004.
