One in three family mothers reported at a murder trial that her partner had been shot dead at the door of their home by a "boy" dressed in black.

Michelle Usher told prosecution lawyer Shane Costelloe SC that she thought it was a joke until she heard a third blow and her partner Alan O'Neill, screamed in pain.

The witness appeared at the trial of Warren Nolan (22) from Rowlagh Park in Clondalkin, who pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr. O. Neill at Kiltalown Road, Tallaght on May 27, 2015.

Nolan also pleaded not guilty to damaging a car in a fire on Belfry Square in Tallaght the same day.

Ms. Usher told Mr. Costelloe that she was preparing to complete a university degree in May 2015, while Mr. O. Neill (age 35), painter and decorator by trade, was to begin a training course personal.

She had a child with Mr. O. Neill and he was a father figure for his three children.

That night, Mr. O'Neill went to the gym, went home, and then went out again to give Ms. Usher's brother a lift.

Mrs. Usher was in her living room when she saw Mr. O'Neill's car arrive and park in the driveway, followed by a haulier of people who stopped him. on the road at the entrance to the alley. Mr. O. Neill got out of his car and the lights flashed when he pressed the alarm button.

When Ms. Usher saw the second car stop, she leaned closer to the window because she found it "strange".

Then a "dark silhouette" entered the garden. He looked like a "young guy" and when she heard two "very loud detonations", she thought it was a joke until she opened the door, she heard a another detonation, saw a blue flash and a black weapon in the dark silhouette. hand followed by Mr. O. Neill screaming in pain.

Mrs. Usher grabbed her and led her to the door of the living room while another shot broke the window of the hall door.

She said: "Everything happened so fast and I did not believe what was happening."

She saw the figurine with the weapon coming out of the garden and back in the vehicle that then "took off".

By her posture and movements, she thought that he was a "young boy" or a "teenager", but she did not see his face.

He was dressed in dark clothes and she could not remember if he had something that covered his face. Alan was pale and seemed to have a crisis.

He told her to call an ambulance and make sure the children stay in bed. His neighbor Stephen O. Connell arrived and, seeing Mrs. Usher "hysterical", he took the phone and followed the instructions of the paramedic until the arrival of a ambulance.

Defense counsel Michael Bowman SC suggested to the witness that she recalled seeing a young boy or teenager influenced by media reports that two teenagers had been arrested at the time. following the shooting.

She said that she was not reading newspapers at that time because she was "traumatized" and was more concerned about taking care of her children.

Earlier, the jury had heard Mr. Costelloe's opening speech, in which he stated that the accused had been arrested after a woman smoking a cigarette on her balcony had alerted Gardai from a suspicious car.

At the time of the shooting described by Ms. Usher, a woman from another part of Tallaght was smoking a cigarette on her balcony when she noticed a car driving erratically.

She found it suspicious so she called Gardai who reacted quickly and spoke with the driver of this car when they saw, close by, another car in flames.

The lawyer stated that this was the case with the car being burned and that the accused, after firing at Mr. O'Neill, burned it.

He added that two people who were in the now burning car were heading to the place where Gardai was talking with the driver of the suspicious car, but, when they noticed Garda, they ran. One of them escaped but the other, Mr. Nolan, was arrested.

The jury will hear evidence that Mr. Gardai found gloves on Mr. Nolan's person that, when badyzed by a forensic expert, were found to be covered with gun residue.

The trial continues before Judge Paul McDermott and a jury of six women and six men.
