A young woman who just could not stop blowing into a tube of Pringles chips caused a scene in a supermarket and sentenced her to two months in jail.
Kathleen McDonagh, 24, of 1 Inchera Close, Mahon, Cork, pleaded guilty to criminal damages at a price of $ 1.50.
Judge Brian O'Shea sentenced her to a four-month suspended sentence at half of her sentence.
Inspector Ronan Kennelly described the context of the offense committed at Christmas. He added that McDonagh had entered the Tesco store in Mahon Point on December 27, 2016 and had gone to the auto-scan area. Two security guards watched her in front of the camera and identified her as a forbidden person from the store for previous interactions.
"When the security guards approached her, she opened the Pringles and removed the sheet top. She said, "I've opened it, so you have to let me pay for it," said Insp Kennelly.
"It has not been damaged and can not be resold, with a loss of € 1.50. She said that she wanted to buy the Pringles but that she was not allowed to be in the store.
McDonagh had 14 convictions for theft and two for causing criminal damage. O'Shea J. noted that conditional sentences had no effect on the accused.
Shane Collins-Daly, in defense, said that, according to McDonagh, she was right there to buy a pack of Pringles. However, she was excluded from the store and should not have been there.
O'Shea JA said, "It's hard not to look smart."
Collins-Daly said the woman was better off in her life and had been working in a hair salon for five months.
Justice O'Shea left the sentencing hearing for Gardaí to inquire about this job. The defendant later stated that she had not worked there for three weeks and was now working at her mother's home.
O'Shea J. then imposed the sentence partially stayed. Recognition pending a call was set at € 200.
