Brian Kerr believes that the decision of the ISPs to appoint Mick McCarthy and Stephen Kenny as successive Irish managers in the same week is a "strange arrangement". In a decision that appeals to the FAI and its CEO after days of scrutiny and criticism following the dismissal of Martin O'Neill, the FAI has awarded Mick McCarthy a contract until the end of the Euro 2020 and Kenny a contract to succeed him. Meanwhile, Kenny will train the Irish under 21 and will play an advisory role to other minor international teams.
Former manager Kerr reacted to the nominations regarding blank coverage of the Virgin Media Champions League.
I think it's a weird arrangement, I've never met like this in football before. We see this happening in rugby, but it's different, and it's much more obvious than whether or not Joe Schmidt was going there for a long time. It's almost as if the ISPs say, "Mick, we think you're the ideal candidate for the job, for a while, but you can not get away with it after two years." But we know one guy, we think it will be good in two years if we tell him that he is receiving it now and that we are giving him some practice on another level that will not be the same. It will be a little different from what you have done before, but we are certain that it will be the ideal man two years later.
It's a very weird arrangement. I'm happy for both of them. I know Stephen since he was young and I signed him for St Pat's. I am delighted with his progress and have even predicted that he would one day become director of Ireland in an article with the Irish Independent two years ago.
I'm surprised that this happened quickly and that they took this arrangement, but for both, they must be very happy and that it can work, but I think it's a weird way to see the problem falling. Mick was with us last Monday and Tuesday and I remember joking with him about how things are going well for Martin, he could be with us in a few weeks and the three ex-managers could be sitting together!
But I knew it was one of the favorites but I did not think it would happen that fast.
