Ballybrack FC is excused for a "blatant miscarriage of judgment" after falsely reporting the death of one of its players.
The Dublin-based club told the Leinster Senior League that Fernando Nuno La Fuente, of Spanish descent, was killed in a traffic accident last Thursday.
The team's match against Arklow Town on Saturday was postponed, while the other teams in the league observed a minute of silence in the player's honor.
The league also reportedly published a death notice in The Herald before it was discovered that La Fuente was alive.
Ballybrack FC said it contacted the player to confirm his well-being and described the incident as "serious and unacceptable fault".
In a statement posted on Facebook, the club said: "The club, the senior players and the management team have learned that a flagrant misjudgment had been committed in a correspondence sent by a member of the direction of the main installation. team at the Leinster Senior League.
"This serious and unacceptable error was completely false and was committed by a person who experienced serious personal difficulties without the knowledge of all the other members of the club."
"At this point, we can only offer our sincere apologies to the Leinster Senior League, our opponents, Arklow Town FC and the multitude of clubs and footballers who contacted us or sent messages from support in recent days. "
The club added that "the person in question was relieved of all his football duties" following an emergency meeting.
David Moran, president of the Leinster Senior League, told RTE that the story "had begun to collapse" after being asked about support for the family.
"We wanted to show our sympathy and go to Mbad and maybe meet the family and see what we could do to help in this horrible situation," he said.
"And we were told that he had been repatriated by plane on Saturday. Right away, this sounded the alarm for us.
"We checked the hospitals, we checked everywhere. Nobody could find anything about this young man. Obviously, some of his teammates published information on social networks, saying that he had returned to Spain four weeks ago. "
The league issued a statement in which it claimed to have acted in "good faith" after learning of the death, but added: "The league would like to offer its sincere apologies for the distress caused by the notification to clubs of the disappearance of a valuable player. "
