Jose Mourinho says David de Gea "wants to stay" at Manchester United and urged the club to face his salary demands.

From GeaThe current agreement expires this summer – though United has the option to extend it by one year – and discussions have been ongoing for several months.

MourinhoThe men had a poor start to the Premier League season and are currently at 14 points of the pace.

Meanwhile, they are at the bottom of the Champions League Marouane Fellaini's late strike and a fabulous De Gea rescue to keep the score at 0-0.

And Mourinho urged the club's hierarchy to bind De Gea to a new long-term contract with the club.

"I know he wants to stay," said Mourinho. "I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they are working on it. I therefore hope that sooner or later they will come to a good conclusion.

"Without David's rescue, there would be no winning goal. He is the best goalkeeper in the world and if we want to be a great club, a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world.

"You also need other top players [in their position] in the world, in this case, we have only the best goalkeeper in the world. "
