Minister of Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone said that 80 people identified as victims of abuse had called Scouting Ireland's confidential phone support service after identified 71 alleged abusers and 108 alleged victims.
In a statement, Katherine Zappone said she had met today with representatives of Scouting Ireland to discuss her concerns following revelations last week.
She said that she would be aware of the number of alleged victims and their alleged perpetrators in mid-December.
Minister Zappone said she discussed what to do. Scouting Ireland takes the time to ensure that all alleged victims of abuse who have come forward are properly supported and counseled and that the same level of support is made available to all other victims who may come forward.
"I sought to rebadure the representatives that the historical review was continuing and that any allegations contained in historical records or subsequently brought to Scouting Ireland's attention would be immediately transmitted to Tusla and to the Commission. Gardaí (or any other competent police authority).
"I was badured that Scouting Ireland was taking these shocking revelations very seriously."
The minister said there was a discussion about the costs badociated with putting in place and maintaining the necessary supports for victims who come forward and how they plan to meet those costs.
